The Town of High River and the Light Up George Lane Park Committee are excited to announce that a temporary outdoor skating rink will be installed on the ball diamond in George Lane Park this holiday season.

The project has been organized with support from the Rotary Club of High River, the High River Kinsmen and the Highwood Lions Club; as well as High River’s Home Hardware, Canadian Tire and Lutes Timber Mart; with additional support from representatives of FortisAlberta Inc. and Clean Harbors Canada.

Skating will be available as soon as the weather is cold enough to properly install the ice surface.

Currently, the area is to be regarded as an active construction zone, and residents and other visitors to the park are asked to stay clear and obey construction signage for their safety.

Any entrance or activities in or near the construction area, excluding authorized personnel, are not encouraged or supported by the Town and users do so at their own risk.

High River Sobeys, Crawford Ins. Group and Coco Lux have partnered up in order to fill stockings for local seniors and veterans this holiday season.

The goal is for area residents and businesses to collect some items (ideas listed below), fill a stocking and drop it off at High River Sobeys, Crawford Ins. Group and Coco Lux. Ideally, donors will build their own stockings to gift to a senior or veteran, but monetary contributions or individual items listed below will be accepted.

The group is hoping to fill 500 stockings that will be delivered on the 16th, 24th & 25th of December to residents at Sunrise Village, Medicine Tree Manor, the High River Hospital, and Silver Willow Lodge in Nanton. Special deliveries can be made to individual residences in High River as well. If you know of a senior or veteran who would be brightened by a delivery, please email Sue at [email protected] or call 403-333-1296.

Stocking ideas:
What would make your grandparent smile? Candy, chocolate, note pad & pen, small stuffed animal, magazine, adult coloring book and felts (very therapeutic) game books, ornament, scarves, mittens, hat, gift card, cheery and cheesy something that lights up, a card wishing a Merry Christmas.

Monetary Donations:
Monetary donations will go towards filling stockings as well as direct requests. Last year, heating blankets, winter gear, and therapeutic pillows and socks were purchased with these donations, as well as comfortable pajamas, creams and other medicated items. Please contact [email protected] or 403-808-7816 to arrange e-transfer or drop off of monetary donations.

Donations can be dropped off at any of the following locations:

  • High River Sobeys – 98 Centre St SE, High River
  • Crawford Ins. Group – 1035 Centre St SE Unit 2, High River
  • Coco Lux Beauty Bar Spa & Tanning – 104 3 Ave SE # 6, High River

Contributions from businesses and individuals will be recognized on the Crawford Insurance Facebook page and the High River Times.
