Flood Mitigation & Prevention

Flood mitigation provides long term solutions to reduce the risk of and minimize erosion caused by flooding events.  A municipal flood mitigation plan is a detailed engineering design and construction plan determined after a complete site study is done that includes a fish habitat and wildlife assessment determining necessary environmental mitigation measures.

Since the flood event of 2005 the Town has undertaken a number of capital projects to protect High River’s property, infrastructure, natural habitat and wildlife located in the Highwood River flood plain.

 The mitigation projects include:

  • Beachwood Tight Wrap Dyke
  • Extension of the dyke at the end of Riverside Green
  • Engineered bays and swales for 18th St & 9th Ave SE Industrial Park
  • Backflow control vaults for river outfalls to prevent flooding in storm system
