Dog…Man’s best friend. The Town of High River and its residents like dogs – especially when a dog’s best friend is one who is responsible and caring to not just the dog – but their neighbours and community too! Like many other towns and cities, the Town of High River has a Bylaw regarding animals which protects the animals, the owners, neighbours and the community itself.
Licensing
Licensing of dogs benefits both the dog and the owner. If your pet accidentally gets loose without you knowing, our Bylaw Services/Peace Officers will be able to quickly identify the owner, thus making the return of the animal to its home quicker for you both.
Licensing of your dog is required if he/she is at least 3 months old
Purchase your dog license at the Town Office, located at 309 MacLeod Trail SW.
Or renew on-line through e-Services
The fee for spayed/neutered dogs is $25.00/yr.
The fee for un-altered dogs is $50.00/yr.
Owner Responsibilities
- Secure your property boundary
- Spaying or neutering your dog will save 50% on yearly licensing.
- Leashing your dog on public property is required
- Picking up animal defacation is not only a requirement on public and private properties, it is the right thing to do and your neighbours will respect you for it.
- Dogs may run free ONLY in the Off Leash Park (location)
- Dogs are prohibited on school grounds, play grounds, sports fields and golf courses
- Make sure your dog is a 'good neighbour'
- Dogs bark when lonely, bored and to alert owners - excessive barking disturbs neighbours
- Pets are family too and deserve to be treated as such
- Resolve barking with training, socializing, exercising and family interaction
- Please do your part to ensure your dog is healthy and well cared for

Has a stray animal decided you can rescue him and you don't know quite what to do? High River Bylaw Officers are here to help. After Hours
If you find a dog after hours, the animal can be taken to Room to Run Boarding Kennels. They are located on secondary Highway 562 approximately 2 Kilometers west of 88th Street. Look for them on the south side of the road. They are open from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. daily. Their phone number is (403) 601-2520.
Lost Dog
Losing your pet can be a very stressful time. Bylaw Services are here to help. Our aim is to get you reunited with your pet as quickly as possible. Please follow our step by step guide.
- Look around your neighbourhood, speak with your neighbours.
- Call Bylaw Services and leave a message. Often residents who have found an animal will call and inform us of dogs they have found and are currently fostering until the owner is located. Leaving a message will allow us to reunite you with your animal.
- Leave a message with Heaven Can Wait/Room to Run Boarding Kennels at 403-601-2520 as this is our drop off centre for found dogs.
- Ensure your dog is wearing his license.
Is your Dog Licensed?
It is an offence to have an unlicensed dog in High River. Having a license displayed on the collar of your pet ensures your pet will be reunited with you promptly.
Skunks
High River Bylaw Services also provides a free “trap and release” skunk program. If you are experiencing regular problems with skunks then please get in touch during business hours for further information.
